Why Merrick Hardwoods

Merrick Hardwoods

History / Company Overview

Merrick Hardwoods is a vertically integrated forest products company and one of the largest manufacturers of Appalachian lumber and hardwood flooring in the United States.

Merrick Hardwoods is a Privately Owned Company with over 50 Years Growth in the Hardwood Industry. We own and manage timberlands and are one of the largest lumber buyers in our region. By being vertically integrated, we are able to manage the entire manufacturing process, producing the finest quality products while making the best use of our natural resources. We believe that’s an important Merrick Hardwoods advantage.

Here's How We Do It

We work hard to be a different kind of company—one that does the right thing, because it’s the right thing to do. This applies not only to how we treat our environment, but to everything we do at Merrick Hardwoods.

We are one of only a few major flooring manufacturers to own and manage our own timberland and to employ a full time forestry staff. They put together 100-year plans for the forest we own. We think it’s the right thing to do for the future of our company, our employees, and our families.

At Merrick Hardwoods, we manufacture kiln-dried Appalachian red oak, white oak, ash, hickory, hard maple, soft maple, cherry, aromatic cedar, poplar, and basswood lumber. Our lumber comes from our own saw mill and saw mill partners within a 150 mile radius of our operations. Merrick lumber is used in the manufacture of Merrick residential hardwood flooring and is also sold to other lumber users in the United States and exported to select countries.

The excess wood fiber and sawdust collected throughout the flooring manufacturing process supplies our state-of-the-art Wood Pellet Fuel division, where we produce premium grade clean-burning wood fuel pellets. Here, more than 50,000 tons of wood fiber and sawdust generated each year, instead of going to a landfill, goes to making an economical and environmentally-friendly alternative energy source. This, in turn, helps decrease our country’s dependence on fossil fuels. Somerset brand pellets are sold across the U.S. through major pellet distributors and retailers for use in pellet stoves.

Merrick Hardwoods Flooring

Merrick Hardwoods is a major U.S. manufacturer of unfinished hardwood flooring in Appalachian species.

Our vertically-integrated advantage means that Merrick Hardwood lumber supplies the kiln-dried lumber to our flooring division for the manufacture of residential hardwood flooring. This gives us tremendous quality control over the final product.

Somerset Pellet Fuel

Somerset is one of North America’s Highest Quality Manufacturers of Premium Wood Pellet Fuel. In support of our “Waste Not" philosophy and our commitment to the environment, we recognized an opportunity to turn our excess wood fiber and sawdust into a clean-burning, efficient, and economical biofuel product. We built a modern manufacturing facility that is fully automated and currently produces 50,000 bags of pellets per week. That’s more than 2,500,000 bags of pellets per year.

Now more than 50 tons of wood fiber and sawdust generated by our manufacturing processes—instead of ending up in a landfill—is converted into premium grade pellet fuel.

Somerset brand pellets are sold across the U.S. through major pellet distributors and retailers for use in pellet appliances.

Our Facilities

Merrick Hardwoods' plants are strategically located in the Appalachian Mountain region of the United States. Some of the finest lumber in the world comes from this region. The lumber is considered superior because of the benefits inherent in the location and the land.

The climate is a main factor in producing the naturally superior quality—the area’s warm summers and cool spring and fall seasons insure that the growth of the trees is gradual. Slower growing trees results in tight growth rings, consistent grains, and strong fibers that lead to strength, durability, and beauty. Merrick Hardwoods' lumber production facility resides in Burnside, KY.

We work hard to be a different kind of company—one that does the right thing, because it’s the right thing to do.
